Vroom vroom..

A friend of mine just told me that she had recently placed deposit for a black Toyota Vios. Wow! When I heard that I was so excited and at the same time soooo envious of her. A brand new car for herself with 50% financial support from her dad. WowWowWow! I also want.

There was once I was so tempted into buying a car as well. That was about 3 months ago when I was still in my second job. The colleagues there either drive or are driven to work. Including those who live within the radius of less than 1km (so damn annoying, what are the legs for?). With the whole world vrooming to work, it’s really tough not to feel convinced that I need a car too. Sometimes I even felt a strong urge to rush down to Leng Kee, pick a car with $1 downpayment and drive it home.

But I’m glad I didn’t do it. Come on, I’m the rational one. I know how to do my sums. I’m professionally trained in this field ok. Getting a car is a sure-liability in Singapore. Besides the convenience and as a social symbol (depending on the type of car one drives), a car is nothing but a disguised long-term liability claiming to be an asset. It’s probably a better idea to specifically identify motor vehicles as LT liability in the FRS. It’s so wrong to recognize it as an asset. Although it’s good for perpetually late people like me, great for shopping trips, late nights’ out and extremely convenient for impromptu social meetings, there’s no reaping of future economic benefits at all. Not even when you decide to sell it off after a couple of years. It’s certainly a loss-making investment that eats up a big chunk of your pay every month. A drain of so much financial resources for that little bit of social benefits…

Arggh, I feel so much better not having a car. Anyway my friend has promised to buy me one when he turns rich, owes a plane and castle. I shall wait for the day to come. :)
